Teodora del Carmen Vasquez spent a decade in prison in El Salvador after she was arrested and handcuffed as she lay in a pool of blood immediately after the tragedy. Her child was stillborn in 2007, and during her years in prison wasn't allowed to receive letters from her family. Teodora was one of more than two dozen women behind bars for up to 40 years after suffering pregnancy complications . But El Salvador is still far from fully ensuring the rights of women and girls in the country. "Women who experience complications during pregnancy should be supported and given proper medical care, not prison sentences.
