Christchurch Women's Prison director Wayne McKnight confirmed the prisoner died on Tuesday of an apparent suicide. A woman has died in an apparent suicide at Christchurch Women's Prison. This death has been referred to the coroner and will be subject to an investigation by the Corrections Inspectorate and the Police. She was released last year, but had since gone back to prison.
