It comes after Boris Johnson announced a new "rule of six" which outlawed indoor and outdoor gatherings in England of more than half a dozen people from Monday. Tougher restrictions for Wales came as cases of coronavirus rose by 102 in Wales on Thursday, bringing the total number since the start of the pandemic to 18,931. In Merthyr Tydfil, cases have risen above 50 coronavirus infections per 100,000 people – the same threshold where lockdown restrictions were imposed in Caerphilly on Tuesday. On Thursday, the rate of cases in Rhondda Cynon Taf was 37.3 per 100,000 people in the past seven days. Caerphilly continued to have the highest rates in Wales with 91.1 cases per 100,000 people over the same period.
