Indigenous leaders lose faith in Quebec justice system after Crown presses few charges in abuse scandal

A wide-ranging investigation into allegations of police abuse of Indigenous Quebecers produced only enough evidence to two charge officers, Crown prosecutors said Friday in Val-d'Or, Que. The Crown did say the investigation produced enough evidence to pursue charges against two retired police officers in Schefferville, Que. Protesters outside the Val-d'Or courthouse denounce the decision by Quebec prosecutors not to pursue charges against provincial police officers from the area. "The Quebec system is not made for us Indians," said Françoise Ruperthouse, a Pikogan counsellor, as she made her way to her car. The government has asked that the federal inquiry into murdered and missing indigenous women look into the allegations of abuse in Val-d'Or.
