Indian Skimmer sighted at creek on Kakinada coast


The creek, 3.2-km away from the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, falls in the Central Asian Flyway of migratory birds. BNHS surveyA team, led by Kakinada-based ornithologist K. Mrutyunjaya Rao, has carried out the study as part of the Indian Skimmer Count by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). “On December 20, a total of 146 Indian Skimmers were recorded in the creek to the north of the Kumbabhisekham mudflat. By December 29, the number of Indian Skimmers sighted in the creek was 230. Last winter, 250 Indian Skimmers were sighted on the mudflat, which is now completely destroyed,” Mr.Mrutyunjaya Rao told The Hindu.
