FOR the first time in the Philippines a bilateral symposium on Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine, was held on November 13, bringing together Indian and Filipino experts to discuss potential cooperation between India and the Philippines, specifically on the role of Ayurveda in Covid-19 management. Literally the “science of life,” Ayurveda is a medical system with its roots in ancient Indian civilization, practiced for thousand of years, making it the oldest living system of health. In her inaugural address, India Foundation Director Lalitha Kumaramangalam shared insights into recent developments that have increased global recognition of Ayurveda as a health science. Ayurveda expert Dr. Rajmohan V of Government Ayurveda College noted that India and the Philippines, rich in biodiversity, have tremendous scope for cooperation in use of medicinal plants. Ambassador of India to the Philippines Shambhu Kumaran called for practical measures by the two governments to expand structured engagement on Ayurveda and traditional medicine.
