Indian Covid variant now UK's dominant strain after another 5,400 cases in a week

Weekly variant data from PHE shows that cases of the Indian variant in the UK have risen by 5,472 since last week to 12,431. (Image: PA)This week, 278 people who tested positive for the Indian variant attended emergency departments up and down the country, PHE said. While 73% of Indian variant cases are in unvaccinated people, only 3.7% were in people who had received both doses of a jab, suggesting the UK's vaccination rollout was protective against the strain. However the most recent data detailing spread in schools was not updated in this week's round of figures. As of last Thursday there had been 109 cases of the variant detected across the UK since it was first designated a 'variant under investigation' on May 24.
