India keeping close eye on Maldives crisis

On Thursday, Maldivian Supreme Court ordered the immediate release of former president Mohamed Nasheed and eight other opposition leaders. The court also ordered they be tried again, saying the previous proceedings had violated the constitution and international law. The attorney general of Maldives warned the court against trying to impeach President Abdulla Yameen. The same sources said Maldives needs urgent help from India and other democratic countries, writes TOI. Should the opposition reach a majority, they would be able to unseat the speaker, who is a member of the ruling party, and pass no confidence motions against government officials, reports Reuters.
