India among countries where 10% of drugs are substandard: WHO


Photo: Hemant Mishra/MintNew Delhi: Approximately 10.5% of medicines in low and middle income countries including India are sub-standard and falsified, a report released by World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday showed. The papers in question reported on testing of 48,218 samples of medicines collected from 88 countries, including India. “The aggregate observed failure rate of tested samples of substandard and falsified medicines in low and middle income countries is approximately 10.5%. Also, recently, some of the most common medicines such as Combiflam and D-Cold consumed in India were declared as sub-standard by Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). “Substandard medicines are a major issue in India and we are looking out for ways to tackle the problem.
