The world got to see actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Pakistani author Saadat Hasan Manto for the first time at India Today Conclave 2017 in Mumbai. When asked about what and who were the real-life parallels behind the film, director Sudhir Mishra said, "I don't know. The film gave a glimpse into Nandita Das's upcoming feature-length film Manto which is a biopic based on the life of controversial Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Speaking on how Manto would react to the state of contemporary freedom of speech in India, Nandita Das said, "Manto would have lost it if he were alive today." "The beauty of Saadat Hasan Manto is that even after so many years, he is so relevant," Nandita Das said.
