At least 26 workers have been killed and up to 100 have been injured in an explosion at a state-owned power station in northern India. Ten people died of severe burns overnight and others are in a critical condition after a boiler pipe burst, spewing hot ash. The unit was being trialled at a coal-fired plant run by the state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation. The company said that there had been a “sudden abnormal sound” followed by a gas leak and explosion. Police believe that the ash collected in the furnace below the boiler and raised the pressure inside to the point of explosion.
