This helps explain the fascination with the all-women crew “manning” Gandhinagar as superintendents, conductors and station masters. Most Indian women are not working at train stations but undertaking domestic work or childcare. Even women with jobs are often expected to give them up when they get married or have children. There is also talk of a creche, still a rarity in India, so women can bring their children to work.
