Catalonia is the independence movement of the moment as Spain is busy taking extraordinary steps to block Catalonia from continuing down the path toward independence. Other independence movements are spread all over the world with Scotland, Flanders, and Kurdistan being some of the more prominent and advanced ones. If Catalonia did become independent, should they be required to take a share of the national debt with them? This creates incentives for the losers to desire independence and for the winners to resist. While many such movements may be packaged as political, deep down, economics is often at the core.
