On day 3 of the test match, action was called off after a short ball off Bumrah hit Elgar's helmet. Reflecting on that incident and several other hits to his body, Elgar in press conference said that he believed the match should have been called off. Recollecting the Phil Hughes incident, Elgar was quoted as saying, " We had an incident of being hit in the head, where we could have had an incident of what happened in Australia. Elgar said play should have been stopped much before he was hit on the head. Describing the wicket as 'freak', Elgar said he has never seen Wanderers pitch behaving in such a way.
