Self-harm incidents at Invercargill Prison have increased since mid-2019 but Corrections say a considerable number can be attributed to one person. Figures from the Department of Corrections released under the Official Information Act outline self-harm incidents at Invercargill Prison and Otago Corrections Facility. From July 1, 2018 to October 31, 2020, Invercargill Prison staff intervened in six self-harm incidents that were a threat to life. Corrections’ classify its self harm incidents into two categories: self-harm threat to life and self-harm no threat to life. Wilma McCorkindale/Stuff Otago Correctional Facility, near Milton, where there have been more than 100 self-harm incidents in total since June 2015.
