Increase in values hits some towns with more rates

Increase in values hits some towns with more ratesPIERS FULLER/STUFF Featherston's land values have jumped, but that means they will be paying more rates. But as almost a third of its annual rates bill is based on land value and the town's land has increased more proportionally than the other two main towns in its district, Greytown and Martinborough, its rates will go up more. In fact, based on the average rates value for this year, Featherston property owners would pay $45 more a year, while in Greytown the average would be $42 less. The town's average land value has increased by 46 per cent over the same period. Despite doubling in value, an average Featherston section is still only half that of neighbouring Greytown.
