When I tried to draw her out on the relationship between her writing and politics, however, she was diffident. Given this defining pragmatism, it should surprise no one that Abrams the novelist is, by her own description, “definitely a plotter.” That goes for her literary career too. Abrams’ drive calls to mind Avery Steele, the novel’s heroine, a clerk on the Supreme Court who has too many problems to save the world.
