NEWARK — The Devils appeared to be a franchise on the rise after a surprising playoff berth last season. But except for the glimpse of hope offered by the young goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, 2018-19 quickly devolved into a lost season. As they head into their bye week and the All-Star break, the Devils (18-23-7) have 43 points, just one more than the N.H.L.-worst Los Angeles Kings. The Devils’ five road victories represent the fewest in the league. “We have not been nearly good enough this first half of the season, and it’s definitely been a disappointment.”
