The panic that set into Jimmy’s eyes the moment Gretchen described them as a family made his midnight runaway inevitable. To borrow the tagline from a Wes Anderson film whose self-conscious tweeness would be ruthlessly, drunkenly mocked by Jimmy and Gretchen, for You’re the Worst family isn’t a word — it’s a sentence. Still, family is only the purest expression of what has emerged as You’re the Worst’s overarching theory of people. Increasingly, though, You’re the Worst is just a statement of fact: you, everyone, everyone but me, is the worst. We need them, and so we need to compromise ourselves, and that is just the worst.
