In Religious Freedom Case, Supreme Court Calls For Tolerance


The Court sided 7–2 with Jack Phillips, the baker, in an opinion that leaves most of the big questions unanswered. Gorsuch and Alito were particularly concerned with ensuring that unpopular religious beliefs remain protected. As Gorsuch explained:In this country, the place of secular officials isn’t to sit in judgment of religious beliefs, but only to protect their free exercise. Gay couples will still fear discrimination and religious business owners will still fear that their beliefs will be demeaned and misunderstood in court. He is the only Justice who has worked both to advance gay rights and ensure broad protections for religious freedom.
