Yet this June, more than most, raises the complicated question of what Pride Month means, and whom the celebrations serve. On a basic level, Pride Month acknowledges and encourages LGBTQ+ people and their allies. Or as state Rep. Susan Ruiz told me: “Pride Month is about the colorful celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. That is, seeing Pride Month as an opportunity to speak up for LGBTQ+ rights and make political demands for full legal equality. Beyond the celebrations, beyond the political causes, beyond the calls for justice, Pride Month affirms that LGBTQ+ people exist.
