Gillette’s commercial attempts to tackle a bystander problem. Rigid conformity to traditional ideas of male masculinity is particularly damaging to male mental health. Nevertheless, if the message of the video was “don’t be sexist” or “don’t bully,” it would be pretty inconsequential and preachy. But Gillette’s ad isn’t directed at men who harass or bully but rather the people that standby and excuse their behavior. Still, Gillette’s commercial was not overly political, especially in comparison with recent ad campaigns like Nike’s.
