In His Final Race, California Chrome Falls Short in Pegasus World Cup

The Most Valuable Teams In The NFLIn his final race and attempt to become the richest racehorse in history, California Chrome fell short—far short. Forced to race wide in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational after breaking from the far outside in post 12, the 2016 Horse of the Year raced evenly with Arrogate, the horse that beat him narrowly in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, through the early part of the race, but when they turned for home, it was all Arrogate. Ordinarily free, general admission for the Pegasus World Cup card was $100. The winner’s share of the purse was worth $7 million to Arrogate’s owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. He earned $14.75 million, including his share of the Pegasus purse.
