Taking many in the British publishing community by surprise, Costa Book Awards is discontinuing its long-running program. The Costa Book Awards, a program of Costa Coffee, have been operating for 50 years, and were last heard from on February 1, when it was announced that Hannah Lowe, a poet and memoirist, had won the £30,000 Costa “Book of the Year” purse (US$36,963), for her book of sonnets, The Kids (Bloodaxe Books). The Costa Book Awards were established in 1971 as the Whitbread Book Awards.
