Bill Gertz’s “An Indictment Exposes America’s Witless Intelligence Agencies” (op-ed, Feb. 20) is an uninformed affront to the many dedicated men and women who toil in the shadows to safeguard America from foreign intelligence threats. These counterintelligence professionals are unable to defend themselves in print, so as the U.S. government’s top counterintelligence official I feel compelled to do so. For security reasons, most U.S. counterintelligence achievements cannot be shared publicly, and those responsible for these successes—to their great credit—don’t require or seek such recognition.
