The rate of mutation of SARS-CoV-2 is 12.6 per sample in the country while the global average is 7.23 mutations per sample, the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research said. The researchers published the findings at a press conference in Dhaka on Sunday after studying genome sequences of 263 samples. “But the near double rate of mutation [than the global average] cannot be called concerning for public health. We need more research to find out how alarming the mutations are,” said Selim Khan, the head of BCSIR’s Genomic Research Lab. Bangladesh has recorded 325,157 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel virus, with 4,479 fatalities.
