The paradox describes a cat that could be both alive and dead at the same time, a state called a quantum superposition. Schrödinger didn't think this was possible; he was criticizing the interpretation of quantum mechanics at the time. Now, however, some theorists use it to assert that, in fact, a cat (or any other living thing) could be alive and dead at the same time.
