Maria Namaga and Juliete Massali were on tour with the African Children’s Choir in 1993, when they were snapped enjoying Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto by the Star’s Moira Welsh. “To put that in perspective, before the pandemic, we were at choir number 51.”The African Children’s Choir, run by the charity Music for Life, began in 1984 to assist orphans of war in Uganda. “Music for Life supports schools and literacy programs in slums and communities with vulnerable children,” says Barnett-Tracy. “But the beauty and power of the African children, their African chaperones, and their culture changed my life forever,” she says. “But the tour expands their thinking and then they are given an education that allows them to pursue those dreams.”The African Children’s Choir receives standing ovations everywhere they perform.
