Only about 2% of MLB players were foreign-born in 1940, which rose to 10% by 1990. National Hockey League: A total of 529 of 731, or 72%, of the hockey players in the National Hockey League are foreign-born (non-U.S.-born). The hockey players come from 18 countries, including the United States.
