I'm not exactly barracking for this

I’ve seen a few letters on the subject, from people deeply concerned about the cost of managed isolation to the New Zealand taxpayer. These things go in phases, and that one coincided with the debate about returnees part-paying for managed isolation. Two years of my life on army bases in my native South Africa cured me of any curiosity about them. I’d be happy to be proved wrong, in the NZ case, but military bases are by definition austere, basic facilities. Meanwhile, we have 32 isolation hotels currently operating at high occupancy, with just over 5400 people in managed isolation as of Wednesday.
