Take this sentence in a Beehive press release from May this year about pay equity: "The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that everyone in our public service is paid fairly." The Government has used the phrase "committed to ensuring" 82 times in media releases and speeches issued since the last election. Mind you, it's a non-partisan scourge; the previous National-led government was itself "committed to ensuring" more than 120 things in its final term. We would never use "commit to ensuring" in the course of normal conversation because it would seem flimsy, disingenuous and possibly sarcastic. The last thing you would expect from a teenager saying "Mum, I'm committed to ensuring my bedroom is tidy" is a tidy bedroom.
