The biotech’s philanthropic arm, the Illumina Corporate Foundation, is giving $973,000 to The Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine. “This is a big deal,” said Bradley Moore, a professor and marine chemical biologist at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Moore leads one of the labs at Scripps that discovers and develops drugs from the sea. AdvertisementUC San Diego graduate students Yoon Lee, Nathan Chang, and Evan Tjeerdema work in the new Illumina Laboratory in Hubbs Hall on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. This boost from Illumina will help the world-renowned research institute apply automated tools that are typically only accessible to the private sector and used for large-scale innovation.
