Since 2013, annual emissions from northeastern China of the banned chemical CFC-11 have increased by about 7,000 tonnes, they reported in the peer-reviewed journal Nature. At its most depleted, around the turn of the 21st century, the ozone layer had declined by about five percent. But a study last year found that the ozone layer is unexpectedly declining in the lower stratosphere over the planet’s populated tropical and mid-latitude regions.
