Internally, Mr Trump has granted pardons to his convicted supporters and weaponised the courts to attack his critics. We now have some 40,000 heavily-armed members of ICE, who act almost as Mr Trump’s private army, deployed primarily in Democrat-controlled cities. Such action might, just might, concentrate American minds where opposition to Mr Trump’s determination to acquire Greenland is growing. Insofar as these plans have referred to a purchase agreement, he is not, of course, the first American President to have gone down such a road. In Venezuela, President Trump forcefully removed a despotic leader and he now appears positioned to exert decisive influence over huge oil and gas reserves.
