Iceland might soon be taken over by pirates (well, the Pirate Party). Here’s what you need to know

In Canada’s 2015 federal election, the little-known Pirate Party got a mere 908 votes; roughly one fifth the showing of the Communist Party. But in Iceland, the Pirate Party — a protest party formed only four years ago — could very well form the next government after the country’s October 29 federal election. There are about 30 nationally registered Pirate Parties around the world, all connected to a Pirate Parties International office located in Brussels. Píratar, the Icelandic Pirate Party, was started in 2012 by Birgitta Jónsdóttir, a poet, activist and WikiLeaks collaborator who now serves as its leader. Pirate Party in Iceland is maybe popular but it is not a populist party, not anti establishment but functional for all establishment.
