Ice causes strife and fire prompts evacuation in SouthlandJOHN HAWKINS/FAIRFAX NZIcy conditions in Southland at the weekend resulted in car crashes, delayed flights and burst water pipes; while a fire caused a building evacuation and two people got stuck in a lift. An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said two Air New Zealand flights, from Invercargill to Wellington and from Invercargill to Christchurch, were delayed on Saturday morning due to ice on the runway. The two people were stuck in the lift for an hour and were glad to be out, he said. Several minor car crashes were also reported around the province in icy conditions on Saturday morning, including one at Otatara. Those people inside the building at the time were evacuated and the building closed because the power was turned off, he said.
