IMF Sees Resilient Chinese Economy in Mid- to Long-Term Despite Outbreak

WASHINGTON — China's economy is expected to remain resilient in the medium- to long-term, although the shorter term impact of the fast-moving coronavirus remains unclear, the International Monetary Fund said on Thursday. IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said there was still too much uncertainty to forecast the impact on the Chinese and global economy, but the IMF hoped to have more insights when G20 countries meet in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the end of next week. Concerns about the virus spiked again on Thursday after the Chinese province at the center of the outbreak reported a record rise in deaths and thousands more infections using a broader definition, while Japan became the third place outside mainland China to suffer a fatality. Rice said the Fund welcomed China's efforts to contain the spread of the virus and mitigate its economic impact, including through economic and fiscal measures, adding that the IMF stood ready to help Beijing as needed.
