(File)Researchers at IIT-Madras have identified a sustainable and high-yielding alternative source for the anti-cancer drug Camptothecin. At least 1,000 tonnes of plant material is required to extract just one tonne of Camptothecin, Dr Smita Shrivastava, associate professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras, told The Indian Express. IIT-Madras researchers have now developed an alternative method of Camptothecin production to meet the demand and conserve natural sources. The research was led by Dr Srivastava and published recently in International Journal of Scientific Reports (a Nature Research Publication).
