IGAD Urges for Opening of Humanitarian Corridors in South SudanMarch 28, 2017 - Concerned with the worsening of humanitarian situation in South Sudan, IGAD urged for immediate measures for smooth provision of humanitarian assistance, according to ENA. In this regard, the summit called the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) for a confirmation within a week. The leaders condemned the proliferation of armed groups in South Sudan and called on all armed groups to renounce armed struggle as a means of solving the problems in South Sudan. In response to this call, the Government of South Sudan agreed to announce a unilateral ceasefire and grant amnesty to those who renounce violence. Furthermore, IGAD urged both Sudan and South Sudan to ensure that their territories are not used by any armed groups that threaten the security of both countries, as well as the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCSS).
