In New Zealand, our Government's swift actions have ensured that, so far, we have contained the spread of the virus and have avoided the dire situation some countries are currently facing. In the United States, where many of my relatives live, there are enormous queues outside many supermarkets and gun shops. The major earthquake that shook us on September 4, 2010 was the first time I ever felt unsafe in New Zealand. It is true not everything is perfect in New Zealand, especially for those who are socially, racially and economically marginalised - but I am extremely grateful to live in a country where communities are strong and people are generally kind and compassionate. I don't know what is coming - all I know is that the most horrid things are, in the end, endurable.
