I cannot say who I am, for fear the Taliban will use my writing against my family. They will target those with a real or perceived connection to the international mission, to liberal values or to women’s rights. I remember their presence in the streets when I was growing up, in the months after the international mission defeated the Taliban in 2001. Now, Talib fighters target those who, like my family, stepped into the space created by the international mission. The author’s family is currently applying for a permit to escape Afghanistan and come to Canada, where her extended family reside as Canadian citizens.
