Five years into South Sudan's civil war more than 7 million people are facing severe hunger without food aid, according to the latest analysis by the U.N. and the government. Ayod is one of 11 counties in South Sudan that face extreme hunger. Remote and lacking basic resources like water and health care, the majority of its residents subsist on food aid. Residents blame South Sudan's civil war for their deteriorating situation. South Sudan's government is doing what it can to ensure that "normalcy" returns to its people, said spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny.
