I’m a psychologist – and I believe we’ve been told devastating lies about mental health

WWe are living, we are told, through a ‘mental health crisis’. Black people are more likely to be tasered, sectioned, restrained and over-medicated than anyone else in our mental health services today. Founded in the 1980s by Salvadoran activist and psychologist Ignacio Martín Baró, it argues that we cannot isolate “mental health problems” from our wider societal structures. This framework makes perfect sense when we hear that the UK pandemic has hit the mental health of poor people the most. But those of us who support those in need, such as mental health workers, play a key role in social transformation.
