Hunt for savings starts 'on ground'

Education Minister Nataphol TeepsuwanThe government has allocated almost 490 billion baht to the Ministry of Education, which places the ministry among the highest-spending government agencies this year. "Take for instance, the money which the ministry spends every year to fund our current teacher training programmes," he said. "The number of students is declining due to our low birth rate, so the number of schools must be adjusted to match the number of students," he said. It is unclear what scale of savings he hopes to achieve, and which areas the money would be diverted to. "I realise I bear a huge responsibility to improve the education system and I will do my best," he said.
