Farmers routinely shoot and poison lions and other predators to protect their cattle from attack Erik Joosten/ NIS/Minden Pictures/CorbisA British scientist in Botswana is experimenting with a novel way of saving farmers’ cows from lions: painting eyes on their rumps. “It’s about hijacking animal signals to use them for a conservation… “The idea is to get into their minds and disrupt the hunting process,” said Dr Jordan, a conservation biologist who works with the University of New South Wales, and Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Neil Jordan hopes to trick any predators trying to sneak up on the domestic animals into thinking they have been spotted — which he said was often enough for them to abandon a hunt.
