Hundreds of fridge models are ‘dangerously flammable’, Which? survey finds

Two hundred and fifty models of fridges and freezers are dangerous in the event of a fire and should be withdrawn from sale, according to Which? The consumer organisation said that the use of plastic backing on models by manufacturers including Smeg, Hotpoint and Zanussi made them an unacceptable fire risk because the backing catches fire when exposed to a flame for 30 seconds. investigation of more than 500 fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers concluded that 45 per cent posed a fire risk and could accelerate the spread of flames once a fire had started. It listed 250 models on a “no buy” list, including 63 by Smeg, 37 by Hotpoint and 35 by Zanussi. The Grenfell Tower fire started in a Hotpoint fridge-freezer.
