At least two people died when the quake struck just after midnight on Sunday, sending people rushing to higher ground as tsunami sirens wailed. By noon today nearly 400 aftershocks had been felt, of which at least six were above magnitude 5 — classed as severe — and 216 above magnitude 4. The initial earthquake caused damage to roads, railway lines, bridges and ports.
