Future astronauts could survive on the surface of Mars thanks to solar-powered generators, after scientists find they are more energy efficient than nuclear power. MARS: THE BASICS Mars is the fourth planet from the sun, with a 'near-dead' dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere. It is one of the most explored planets in the solar system and the only planet humans have sent rovers to explore. Once split, they can produce hydrogen, which can be stored in pressurized vessels and re-electrified in fuel cells for power, even when the Sun doesn't shine. 'Compressed hydrogen energy storage falls into this category as well,' noted Abel, a chemical and biomolecular engineering PhD student at UC Berkeley.
