And in that time, we’ve created enough plastic to cover the entirity of Argentina, spread out ankle-deep, Geyer said. “At 50 pounds per cubic yard average density, that’s an awful lot of material.”What’s more, Geyer said, “It’s fair to say [plastic] doesn’t really biodegrate in any really meaningful way. However, our biggest area of plastic consumption is inarguably packaging, accounting for between one third and 40% of all plastic produced today, according to Geyer’s team. “There isn’t a single silver bullet that will solve our plastic waste problem, and I think we’ll probably need to utilize all [possible ways],” he said.
