The California controller’s office has identified the rightful heirs for $119 million in unclaimed insurance payouts. Or even if they’re aware of unclaimed benefits, they may not know how to go about getting them. It’s not as though insurance companies don’t know, or can’t find out, when a policyholder has passed on. However, they weren’t checking the same database to determine the fate of life insurance policyholders, even when premiums stopped being paid.
